Rhodes Old Town:
Rhodes Town, lies within impressive medieval fortifications built by the Knights of St John, a military religious order who made it their power base from 1309 to 1522. It's a joy to wander through the pedestrian-only, cobbled streets of Rhodes Old Town, protected by 14th-century fortifications measuring 4km (2.5 miles) in length. The top attraction is the vast 14th-century Palace of the Grand Masters, housing a museum tracing the islands history. To reach it, walk up Ippoton Street, lined with ‘inns, each one representing a different country from where the knights originated. Close by, the 15th-century Knights Hospital houses the Archaeological Museum, while the nearby Byzantine Museum displays religious icons and frescoes in the former cathedral.
Also take a look at the pink 16th-century Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, built when Rhodes was controlled by the Ottomans. A short distance southwest of town, overlooking the sea, the Acropolis of Ancient Rhodes is home to the Temple of Apollo.

Inland:
Inland Rhodes - beautiful views..If you are feeling adventurous you can explore inland Rhodes where there are many interesting and sleepy villages. You can take a scenic route through the mountains with many choices of small tavernas and bars and enjoy the stunning views as you follow the winding, narrow roads. Almost all roads are modern, metalled roads and are fairly quiet in the mountains. They enjoy spectacular views with occasional glimpses of tiny churches or monasteries perched up Inland Rhodesnear the top of mountains or isolated farms nestling down in the folds of the hills. The West coast of Rhodes is less frequented by tourists and much quieter – ideal for those who want to go off the beaten track.
  • One drive we take when we are returning to the airport at the end of our holiday:
From Gennadi take the Lindos road and turn left toward Vati. When near Appolakkia you can turn right and follow the track towards the reservoir and then on to Siana and if you wish further west to Monolithos. Alternatively in Appolakkia itself the main road takes you on to Monolithos where there is a spectacular old castle high up on the cliffs looking out to sea. The village of Monolithos has several good eating places. From Monolithos you can follow the road all the way up the coast to the Airport. Along the way you will find numerous tavernas and bars.

  • Another day out could include the following:
From Gennadi take the Lindos/Rhodes Town road as far Kolimbia. Turn left for Archiploi and Eleousa. Follow the road through Profitas Ilias (do not go into Apollona) to Embonas. In Embonas one can buy the famous ‘suma’ liqueur. Embonas is also known as the centre for Rhodes wine making. Continue from Embonas and turn right on the coast road to the Airport.

  • From Gennadi take the Lindos/Rhodes Town road as far Afandou and turn left towards Psinthos and Petaloudes (Butterfly Valley - see above) where you can see the butterflies when they are present in the valley. From Petaloudes you can go to Theologos or Paradisi. Psinthos is a very picturesque village with a large interesting village square with tavernas and good food.
